The mood board looks/feels great...looking forward to seeing the designs that emerge from it.
These are some images that reflect the kind of direction I think I'm heading in with my designs...I may end up posting another mood board with more ideas! So, the top left image is the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, which is a twin-island nation in the West Indies. It doesn't specify what West Indies island Emperor Jones takes place on, but Antigua and Barbuda is part of the Lesser Antilles. Jones wants to eventually get back to Africa, so an island in the Lesser Antilles is closer than one in the Greater Antilles would be. But, this is just my idea of where the play might take place. I was also inspired by the flag, specifically its colors. Below the flag is a vintage travel brochure for the West Indies. The relaxed clothing and bandana the woman wears is the type of costume I'm thinking of designing for the old woman. Next, on the bottom left, is some inspiration for the witch doctor (also see picture of necklace - except I'm thinking something much bigger and dramatic). In the center top are images of what I am thinking for Jones and Smithers, respectively. I imagine Jones being overly confident and showy in the way he dresses to cover up for his insecurities, fears, and everything he is running away from. For the fears, I want them to a formless shape and dressed in black, so only bright eyes peak through. I would probably have them wear colored contact lenses to really play this up. Finally, on the right hand side are some ideas for my color palette. Lots of reds and blues with more natural colors, like tan. I was originally thinking a navy blue suit for Jones, but I think that is too traditional for Jones. In the play it says he wears a light blue coat with red and blue trousers. I will probably design something more along this line because I want his costume to be loud and stand out.
